Sinfonia Contempora No. 2: La Nordica (Salz Des Nordens) or La Nordica for short, is the dark-natured cousin of Sinfonia Contempora No. 1 (Von Zeit zu Zeit). La Nordica translates into English as The Nordic, Salt of the North. Roedielius' La Nordica is a more focused, serious work than its playful cousin. Both are of a modern classical construction with a secular focus. Here, as we look and listen to La Nordica, we find allusions of an archetypical nature, of legends and events to overcome. We can see this play out in the titles, such as Ice in the Hourglass, The Bell of Jokkomokk and The Difficult Passage. The orchestration is comprised of symphonic realizations and noise — or as some may describe, scenes from the avant-garde.

This work was recorded between 1993-1996. Interestingly this recording, along with many others from the mid-80s forward, was made possible by a grant from The Alban Berg Endowment. With this generous grant, Hans-Joachm Roedelius was able to purchase a mixer for an 8-track tape deck, a Proteus FX, a Kurzweil K 1000 as well as other pieces of audio equipment. These purchases allowed him to be quite productive during this time period.

La Nordica was originally released in 1996 on Multimood Records. Now reissued on Nepenthe Music, La Nordica has been repackaged by Next Year's New, Inc. with an updated design and refreshed typography. The reissue features liner notes written by Roedelius biographer Stephen Iliffe, cover image by artist Rosa Roedelius, and a re-mastered original audio recording by Robert Rich.
